A bear hug defense refers to techniques used to escape or counter an opponent’s bear hug, which is a close-range grappling attack where the attacker wraps their arms around the victim’s torso, either over or under the arms. The goal of the defense is to break free, create space, and regain control.

Common Bear Hug Defenses
Against an Over-Arms Bear Hug (Arms Trapped)
Drop your weight into a lower stance to make it harder to lift you.
Create space by pushing your hips back and using your forearms to press against the attacker’s arms.
Use a head butt, stomp, or knee strike to weaken the attacker.
If there’s enough space, rotate your body sideways and pry their grip apart.
Against an Under-Arms Bear Hug (Arms Free)
Lower your center of gravity by bending your knees.
Use your elbows to strike the attacker’s head, neck, or ribs.
Step to the side and pivot to break free.
Apply wrist or finger manipulation techniques to break their grip.
Against a Bear Hug from Behind
Drop your weight immediately to make lifting difficult.
Use heel stomps on their foot or backward elbow strikes to weaken them.
If your arms are free, grab their hands and peel away fingers or pry their grip apart.
Turn sideways to create an escape angle and break free.
